Newcastle Emlyn, Carmarthenshire

Wandering up Sycamore Street a little while ago, looking in and admiring the shop windows, I was reminded once again of how fortunate we are to have on our doorstep such a unique and special gem of a town. Newcastle Emlyn really does have everything.

There are wonderful gift shops including The Makers Mark, Fair and Fabulous, Iago, Tivy Hall and Country Cabin, each selling out of the ordinary gifts and treasures for the home - items you are unlikely to come across in larger towns. We have small but excellently stocked supermarkets, organic food shops, delis and butchers. There are cafes and coffee shops, restaurants and pubs, sandwich shops, fabric shops, beauticians, hair salons, jewellers, and lovely clothes shops with fashion for all tastes. We have a tattoo shop and a natural healing centre.  We have on our doorstep an electronics retail shop with prices that easily compare with larger retailers, and no waiting 6 weeks for delivery! Just next door is a lighting and small appliance shop. There is a saddlery, antique shops and charity shops, chemists and estate agents.

In addition, this lovely town has a superb garden centre. Of course there are Churches, a library and the much-loved Attic Theatre, home to the talented Attic Players. There is also a history society (Hanes Emlyn)

We have beautiful riverside walks, and the historic Castle which gave Newcastle Emlyn its name, Castell Newydd Emlyn. Every Friday, between 9.30 – 12.30 a lovely Country Market is held, selling home-baked goods and homemade crafts.  GS News, which is now home to the Post Office, sells an excellent selection of English and Welsh greetings cards, newspapers, toys, games, jigsaws and stationery. Writing this, I couldn’t help wondering, how is SO much packed into one small town? Come and see for yourself!

PARKING... we know that parking can sometimes be a problem, but there is an alternative car- park to the main market car-park, accessed via Tanyards Lane by Cawdor garage on the Carmarthen Road (see map to right of page). Once parked, you can just walk through a small alleyway between a couple of buildings to the main street. Easier than it looks!

This is a great resource for anyone who doesn’t know the town very well http://www.discovercarmarthenshire.com/at-a-glance/glance_images/Newcastle-Emlyn.pdf
